She Reads Everything

I love books. Just staring at my bookshelves gives me a sense of peace. Rather than any specific genre, I love good books. To me a good book is one that at the end leaves me happier and/or smarter.

Virginia Hospitality

Virginia Hospitality - Junior League of Hampton Roads Pecan pie recipe is the best. Ever.

Dark Alchemy

Dark Alchemy: A Dr. Sylvia Strange Novel - Sarah Lovett Great set-up, but the story fell apart in the end.

Reposted from samantha - I agree!

The Hardness Factor: How to Achieve Your Best Health and Sexual Fitness at Any Age

The Hardness Factor : How to Achieve Your Best Health and Sexual Fitness at Any Age - Steven Lamm, Gerald Secor Couzens This is an excellent health book for men and the women in their lives. I got it for my husband and then read it cover to cover myself. Well-written, informative, helpful, and easy to read. I've recommended it to several girlfriends who have questions and/or concerns about their husbands' health.

The Road to Unafraid: How the Army's Top Ranger Faced Fear and Found Courage through

The Road to Unafraid: How the Army's Top Ranger Faced Fear and Found Courage through - Jeff Struecker The non-fictional account of a Christian soldier's journey past his fears and into Ranger training, the "Black Hawk Down" incident in Somalia, and ultimately into a new career as an army chaplain, helping the men he used to fight beside find God, hope, and courage amidst death and destruction. An inspiring story of faith and the protection of God in desperate circumstances. The account of fighting in Somalia to reach the downed helicopters is seriously intense - I felt like I was right in the middle of the firefight (which he was).

Saturday Night Special

Saturday Night Special - Mari Carr This is a very quick read and surprisingly good, especially for a Christian short story. There was some definite passion & intense emotion considering you know the characters for all of 7 pages and they don't do anything "dirtier" than kissing - the sexual awareness through body language and eye contact reminded me of Janet Oke's books (although clearly the setting is completely different). Definitely a Christian author to watch.
The Paid Companion - Amanda Quick

So I googled "lost rivers of london" after reading this book and turns out they're real!  I found several (aka three) books on the subject and added London's Lost Rivers by Paul Talling to my TBR shelf.  This is one of the reasons I've fallen in love with good historical romances - I always learn something new and interesting about the past without dragging my brain through a history textbook.

How To Get A Date Worth Keeping: Be Dating In Six Months Or Your Money Back

How to Get a Date Worth Keeping - Henry Cloud Checked this book out from the library in order to laugh over it with friends. Ended up following its advice and two days later met the man who's now my husband. So yes, I absolutely recommend this to any single Christian looking to not be single any more.

No More Diapers for Ducky!

No More Diapers for Ducky! - Bernette Ford, Sam Williams After Once Upon a Potty -- Boy, my favorite picture book on potty training. Ducky has a friend come over who can use the potty like a big kid, and Ducky (gender is unspecified) begins to notice how wet and uncomfortable a diaper is and soon is taking a turn on the potty.

This Man's Army: A Soldier's Story from the Frontlines of the War on Terrorism

This Man's Army: A Soldier's Story from the Front Lines of the War on Terrorism - Andrew Exum The (non-fiction) account of an Army Ranger's deciding to join the army, surviving Ranger Training School, then deploying to Afghanistan as a platoon leader with the 10th Mountain Division.Exum is an excellent writer and uses fascinating details and anecdotes. This was a great read to learn about Ranger training, army camaraderie, and the battle experience. Crude at times, but never unbelievable.

Like a Watered Garden: A Novel (Garden Gates)

Like a Watered Garden - Patti Hill A great cozy read for anyone who enjoys gardening or has recently been widowed. Great balance of realistic grief and struggles with God with the comfort of friends and grounding of family.

Understanding Nutrition

Understanding Nutrition - Eleanor Noss Whitney, Sharon Rady Rolfes Probably the most useful textbook I ever bought in college. I still have my old copy and refer to it frequently as a mom. Excellent nutritional guidelines for children and athletes, growth & weight charts, and amazingly approachable definitions of all the various vitamins and minerals.

Uneasy Alliance

Uneasy Alliance - Jayne Ann Krentz This was my first Krentz novel and while I didn't like this story arc or the incredibly dominating hero who makes it his mission in life to save the heroine from her own ditziness, I did appreciate Krentz's writing and will definitely be trying some of her later books.

Please Don't Come Back from the Moon

Please Don't Come Back from the Moon - Dean Bakopoulos This is the story of a factory-dependent suburb of Detroit where the jobless adult males begin disappearing one by one until they've all left. The remaining women and children refer to the men as having gone to the moon and learn to reorder their lives without husbands and fathers. The desertions have a devastating affect on the male youth who must become men much too quickly and without examples of any kind. I found the book depressingly accurate in its portrayal of the Michigan economy, yet too unstructured to really be captivating.

Good Girls Do (Berkley Sensation)

Good Girls Do - Cathie Linz Mystery Romance about a town librarian who is swept off her feet by the town bad boy. Cute storyline but unremarkable writing. The second in the series (Bad Girls Don't) is better.

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage Fifteenth Anniversary Edition

His Needs, Her Needs: Building an Affair-Proof Marriage Fifteenth Anniversary Edition - Willard F. Harley Jr. According to this book I have the needs of a man and my husband has the needs of a woman - we read this years ago as part of our pre-marital counseling and while it was educational about expectations people potentially bring into marriage, it's categorizing needs as men's vs women's was irrelevant and even ridiculous to us as a couple. This was more useful to us a conversation starter than anything else.
